Marco Benevento has a developed quite the reputation as a jazz and post rock pianist around town. In fact, I love his 2010 album, Between the Needles and the Nightfall – the album has a cover of Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good,” which immediately brings to mind the legendary Thelonious Monk. And his work with hard fusion act Garage-A-Trois is pretty fucking impressive. But he also wrote the theme song listeners hear when they check out WNYC Soundcheck. The song, which is titled “Eagle Rock,” which the folks at WNYC Soundcheck filmed live, manages to evoke the playful, almost devilish wit of Monk but with a sweeping, cinematic feel and a quiet, understated beauty that you’ll hear in his melody.

“Eagle Rock” appears on Benevento’s newest album TigerFace which has been critically well-received. The end of 2012 will be big for him as he’s headlining at the Highline Ballroom on December 28th, and the he’ll be opening for Rubblebucket the last three nights of the year, including their New Year’s Eve show at Higher Ground in Burlington, VT.
