Over the past decade or so, soul music has seen an amazing resurgence in popularity as there have been a number of contemporary bands making new original soul music – using the retro soul sound and they include the likes of Nashville’s AJ and the Jiggawatts; Derobert and the Half-Truths; Sky Hi Funk Band; Chicago’s JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound; the Right Now; Brooklyn’s Charles Bradley; and by far the best of the lot, the charismatic and larger than life, Sharon Jones and her Dap Kings.

Originally scheduled for an August release, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings’ forthcoming effort Give the People What They Want had been delayed when Jones was diagnosed with cancer. But after a successful operation and treatment, Daptone Records will release Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings’ new effort on January 14th. And of course, the band will be touring to support the effort, and it’ll include a February 6th homecoming show at the Beacon Theatre

“Retreat” is the first single and video from Give the People What They Want and has the narrator of the song telling fools to back up before they get smacked up. In fact, the track has Jones sounding the most swaggering that I’ve heard in quite some time.
