About 72 hours before I got on a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt am Main, Germany for the Frankfurt Book Fair, I was at Cake Shop to catch the local blogosphere sensations, Raccoon Fighter at the album release show for their debut full-length effort, ZIL. And live, they managed to balance playing the material somewhat straightforward and creating the sense of an extended jam session; after all, the material on ZIL owes a great debt to both 60s garage rock and surfer rock – both of which (naturally) manage a similar feel.
They manage a goofy, slacker next door kind of vibe, which interestingly enough, seems to be their natural mode and kind of charming in its own right. It helped contribute to the boozy, party feel of the night – and the normally kind of sedate Cake Shop crowd really got into it. I think it was most ecstatic crowd i’ve seen in Cake Shop since White Mystery’s set there on my birthday.
