Led by guitarist and producer Jacob Plasse and featuring members of the Daptones rhythm section, Los Hacheros and the Pedrito Martinez Group, Pelirjoa, is a New York-based collective that’s inspired by the sounds of Ethiopia, the Domnican Republic, Cuba and the Congo. And they do so in in a similar fashion to Henry Cole and the Afrobeat Collective’s Roots Before Branches. In other words, they make the vital connection across the African Diaspora – particularly through funk.

“Injusticia,” is the first single and album title track of their forthcoming debut, Injusticia and the track has a deep, infectiously danceable groove that possess elements of salsa and Afrobeat, revealing how closely related both genres really are. And in some way, the band’s overall sound manages to be a very New York sort of sound – it should bring to mind the sound of Corona, Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst, and others.
