Born in Brazil and based in Orlando, FL, NIKO IS started to win attention across the blogosphere with the release of his debut single, “Cherry Beamer Dreamer,” as he pairs a hypnotic, rapid-fire witty flow, full of playful wordplay and complex inner and out rhyme schemes with a production style that effortlessly meshes room rocking beats  and the breezy tropicalia of his birthplace. His debut full-length effort, Brutus officially dropped yesterday through Talib Kweli’s Javotti Media and it features collaborations with the likes of Thanks Joey, Talib Kweli,  CyHi the Prince, and Kool A.D.

To celebrate the official release of the album and the announcement of an March tour with Talib Kweli and Immortal Technique that the trio have dubbed “The People’s Champions Tour,” Javotti Media had a record listening party at The End Studios in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Before we listened to the album, NIKO IS, who was accompanied by a guitarist and vocalist, started freestyling in English and what sounds like at times Brazilian Portuguese to my ears – and it’s pretty impressive, as you’ll see from this footage I shot from my iPhone 5.
