Last year was a breakthrough year for electronic music artist and producer Cosmo Sheldrake, as his debut 7 inch single received praise from the likes of NME and The Guardian, airplay from BBC Radio 1, over 650,000 Soundcloud plays – and it reached number 1 on the Hype Machine charts. And in 2015, Sheldrake looks to build up on his breakthrough success last year, as he’ll be releasing the Pelicans We EP through Transgressive Records on April 6.

As the press notes mention, the Pelicans We EP draws from a variety of influences including several trips down the Panama Canal to isolated islands populated entirely by scientists, to rainforests in remote, costal British Columbia, as well as his initial love of British folk and nonsensical poetry.

The EP’s first single “Rich” features vocalist Anndreyah Vargas’ ethereal cooing over angular, skittering handclap-led percussions, plinking strings, layered harmonies and bursts of clarinet. The song strikes me as a strange amalgam of lush, densely layered production and sparse, minimalism; of extremely post-modern production with analog and old-fashioned sounds; of an approachable populist sensibility with a surrealist yet playful air.
