Comprised of Kerry Alexander (vocals, guitar), Chris Hoge (drums) and Noah Boswell (bass), the Minneapolis, MN-based trio Bad Bad Hats’ debut full-length effort, Psychic Reader was produced by Brett Bullion, best known for his work with Poliça, Bon Iver, and is slated for a July 17 release through Afternoon Records. And the album’s first single “Shame” is comprised of angular and buzzing power chords, wobbling bass and propulsive drumming paired with Alexander’s silkily seductive and coquettish crooning. It’s an interesting and winning synthesis of infectiously catchy pop melodies with a subtly punk rock sneer – but at its core are lyrics that assertively challenge gender conventions in a fashion that may remind some folks of Gang of Four.
