Last month began the start of the summer concert season here in the NYC area with the Summerstage’s Opening Night featuring Tedeschi Trucks Band and the opening night of Celebrate Brooklyn’s Dance Parties at Brooklyn Bridge Park; however, on a personal note, I think the summer concert truly begins in earnest with Celebrate Brooklyn’s opening night, and this year may be the strongest Celebrate Brooklyn lineup in about two years, as they open things up with R&B legend Chaka Khan tonight and they end the season with the legendary Willie Nelson. And in honor of Chaka Khan’s set at the Prospect Park Bandshell, I had to post one of my favorite songs of hers – her brash, joyous, early hip-hop influenced cover of Prince’s “I Feel For You.”

Clearly, Khan turns a fantastic Prince song into her own song but it also reveals something that should be readily apparent to anyone with a brain – Prince is a fantastic songwriter; so fantastic that someone else can cover his song and it’s the best thing ever. And as you can imagine, I’m looking forward to hearing this one live, as well as all of other great tunes she’s recorded over her lengthy career.
