New Audio: The Johns Channel 90s Alt Rock on “Jesus Christ” and “Don’t Speak Don’t Spell.”

With JOVM turning five on Tuesday, the number of emails I receive from a variety of artists, bands, band management, publicists and labels across the world have increased – and in a way that’s both flattering and overwhelming. I recently received an email from the South London-based quartet The Johns.  Comprised of four buddies, Billy Brown, Christopher Relevitich, Daniel Lovegrove and TJ Bhar, the quartet locked themselves into a studio late last year to write and record what the band calls “short and bittersweet indie rock.” And interestingly enough, their first two singles “Jesus Christ” and “Don’t Speak Don’t Spell” manage to channel 120 Minutes-era alternative rock; in fact, both “Jesus Christ” and “Don’t Speak Don’t Spell with their power pop feel reminds me quite a bit of The Posies, complete with squealing and squawking feedback, and uncanny sense of melody – while kicking ass. But of course, there’s a bruised and bleeding heart underneath the power chords and feedback.
