Live Concert Photography: Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul Band with Marco Foster
August 8, 2015
If you’ve been following JOVM throughout this summer, you’d know that it’s been a rather busy time of late, as summer concert season has been in going on in earnest since May. And of course, as the summer is coming to a close, I’m still actively trying to catch up on all the concert photos I’ve taken but in the meantime, while I have your attention check this out: Several years ago, before JOVM was even a thought, I was covering music for a Long Island City/Astoria, Queens-based publication Ins&Outs Magazine. Because of the magazine’s small staff, I quickly established myself as the magazine’s go-to music journalist. Within my first year or so of my involvement with the magazine, the magazine’s editor Audrey Dimola who, later established herself as one of Queens’ young preeminent poets, had hooked the magazine up with Astoria Music and Arts, an Astoria-based artist collective that had been actively building up a scene. Ins&Outs Magazine promoted, co-organized and covered several of the events, and interestingly enough, as a result of that I wound up meeting several lifelong friends including the incredibly talented photographer Carlos Detres, who was the founder of The Whiskey Dregs Magazine, where I had contributed a ton of stuff and another very dear friend, who I’ll refer to as K, who later got deeply involved in several political causes including Occupy Wall Street and others. (I’d refer to K by her full name but I’ll refrain in order to ensure that it won’t be a problem with her current employer.)
K had moved back to her home state of Connecticut, hustled hard and eventually landed a stupendous job in New Haven, so as you can imagine, I unfortunately don’t see her too often. So I was thrilled when K had hit me up on Facebook and told me that she was intending to spend the weekend of August 7-9 in town, and that she wanted to catch up with me. And normally, when we do catch up its over music — a previous time, we wound up catching Beck at Celebrate Brooklyn! at Prospect Park. This time, we wound up catching the lovely Kat Wright and her backing band, The Indomitable Soul Band with Marco Foster and The Liza Colby Sound (not pictured) at the Mercury Lounge.
Sadly, the openers were not just disappointing but they were boring; however, unsurprisingly, Kat Wright and the Indomitable Soul Band had won the night. Check out some photos from the show below.
