Fronted by trumpeter, arranger and bandleader Igmar Thomas, Igmar Thomas and The Revive Big Band have embarked on a series of concept performances composed and designed as a living testament to the African Diaspora musical traditions that have influenced American culture — and by combining jazz, blues, rock, R&B and hip-hop, the collective seeks to peel back the layers of appropriation and commercial perversion to truly translate the roots of Black music — from Louis Armstrong through golden-era hip-hop –according to the unifying rhythms at the core of the culture in a genre spanning, generation spanning sound. Esperanza Spalding, Nicholas Peyton and Bilal were guests at SummerStage Rumsey Playfield, who joined the band in honoring the innovators and sounds that served as the heartbeat of Black American culture.
