New Video: JOVM Mainstays White Lung Return with an Anthemic, Radio-Friendly, Power Chord-based New Single and Trippy Visuals

If you’ve been frequenting this site over the past two years or so, you may have come across a couple of posts from Vancouver, BC-based punk rock act and JOVM mainstays White Lung. And with the release of their first three, full-length efforts, the trio currently comprised of Mish Barber-Way (vocals), Kenneth William (guitar) and Anne-Marie Vassilou (drums) have received quite a bit of attention across the blogosphere for a bruising, power chord-based sound reminiscent of  Screaming Females and others.

Interestingly, when the trio went into the studio to record the material that would comprise their fourth album Paradise with producer Lars Stalfors, who has worked with HEALTHCold War Kids, and Alice Glass, the members of the band felt it was absolutely critical to change their songwriting and recording approach; in fact, the trio had desired to make their material sound incredibly contemporary with a pop-leaning sensibility, while revealing that they had grown as artists and musicians. Earlier this year, I wrote about Paradise‘s first single “Hungry,” a single that revealed that the band went through a thorough modernization and studio polish while retaining the enormous power chords and blazing guitar pyrotechnics that caught the attention of the blogosphere. Additionally that particular single there was a decided emphasis on sharper, radio-friendly and anthemic hooks and lyrically focusing on cultural issues that required the band look both within themselves and without, towards society at large. The album’s second single “Kiss Me When I Bleed” continued in a similar vein, as the single managed to mesh the urgency and fury of their previously released material with a studio friendly, radio-ready polish and an anthemic hook that you can picture a crowded and sweaty club full of kids shouting along.

“Sister,” the latest single off Paradise will further cement the trio’s reputation for urgent, anthemic hook-laden, power chord-based rock paired with some of the band’s most incisive and probing lyrics to date. Sure, the song may possess a radio-friendly, studio polish but it’s still as forceful as ever. Interestingly, the recently released video was directed by Justin Gradin, who also directed the video for “Hungry,” and the video features a desperate man’s attempt at finding love with two beautiful strangers. As Gradin explains in press notes In a lonely world a man seeks to find love through his telephone. He discovers two women with whom he becomes obsessed with from their captivating and elegant conversations. In the end, these two women’s thrilling lives and escalating partying leave the man feeling isolated and rejected again. It’s basically a 90s chat line commercial on PCP.”
