With permanent locations in Brooklyn, Chicago and London, as well as pop-up locations throughout the world, House of Vans is a multipurpose venue where imagination and creativity are inspired through skateboarding through concrete bowls and on iron railings, through unique art installations and live concerts. This summer, the Greenpoint, Brooklyn location along with FYF hosted a handful of House Party shows featuring Grammy Award-winning hip hop act Digable Planets, up-and-coming Chicago-based emcee Joey Purp, Bay Area-based up-and-comers Downtown Boys, Sheer Mag, Royal Headache, Rise Against, Beach Fossils, The Drums, Descendents and others.

The House of Vans House Party series for the Greenpoint location officially closed out earlier this month with a blistering, mosh pit friendly punk rock show featuring the legendary and influential Descendents, New York-based ska act Mephiskapheles and Fullerton, CA-based punk rock Audacity. Check out photos from the show below.

Currently comprised of founding members Milo Aukerman (vocals) and Bill Stevenson (drums), along with Karl Alvarez and Stephen Egerton, the legendary punk act Descendents can trace their origins back to 1977 when its founding members Stevenson along with Tony Lombardo (bass) and Frank Navetta (guitar) formed the band back in 1977 as a power pop trio; however, with the recruitment of Stevenson’s school friend Aukerman, the band reappeared as a punk rock band, quickly developing a reputation at the forefront of the Los Angeles’ and West Coast’s punk rock scenes. Although the band has gone through a series of lineup changes and several hiatuses, the band has released seven studio albums, three live albums, three compilation albums and three EPs — including their seminal debut effort, Milo Goes to College, and the band has been cited as being hugely influential for a nubmer of pop punk and skate punk bands including Blink- 182, NOFX, Green Day, Pennywise, Rise Against, The All-American Rejects, The Bouncing Souls, The Offspring, The Ataris and others.

The legendary punk act’s set was a career spanning and energetic set that had a sweaty and enthusiastic House of Vans crowd moshing and crowd surfing throughout.

Currently comprised of Andre A. Worrell, Brian Martin, Dave Hahn, Michael Bitz, Wayne Dunton, Greg Robinson and Neil Johnson, Mephiskaphales is a ska and punk act that derive their name from a portmanteau of ska and Mephistopheles in the Faust legend, and unsurprisingly, their lyrics are frequently playfully Satanic in nature. Interestingly, the band can trace their origins to the break up of New York hardcore band The Shaved Pigs, which featured Brendan Tween and Mikal Reich. As The Shaved Pigs split up, Tween and Reich, who both were residents of the East Village decided to start a ska band. After recruiting several friends, including Brian “Underpants” Martin, the band was initially formed under the name Skatterbrains; however, they had to change their name to their current name, once the band realized that there was another band with the name Skatterbrains.

Much like the night’s headliners, Mephiskapheles has gone through a series of lineup changes and hiatuses but since their most recent reunion, the band has managed to be active both on tour and in the studio, and have managed to play a number of shows with a growing list of established and renowned acts including The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, The Bouncing Souls, Rancid, Blink-182, Cro-Mags, Less Than Jake and others.

Comprised of Matt Schmalfeld, Kyle Gibson, Cameron Crowe and Thomas Alvarez, the Fullerton, CA-based punk quartet Audacity formed in 2001, and quickly developed a reputation for brashly exuberant hook-laden pop punk with elements of garage rock, proto-punk and power pop through basement shows, the release of several EPs and four full-length albums — 2009’s Power Drowning Hipster, 2012’s Mellow Cruiser Bruisers, 2013’s Butter Knife Gang and 2016’s Hyper Vessels.

The Californian punk rockers opened a night of live music at the House of Vans in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
