Live Concert Photography: Monogem at The Knitting Factory 5/18/18

Over the past handful of years, I’ve written quite a bit about the critically applauded JOVM mainstay act Monogem, the solo electro pop recording project of Los Angeles, CA-based singer/songwriter Jen Hirsh, and as you may recall the project derives its name from a unique cosmic phenomenon — a monogem ring, the leftover glow of an supernova explosion. Interestingly, one of the largest monogem rings in the observable universe is located near the Gemini and Cancer constellations and for Hirsch, whose birthday is on the cusp of the astrological signs of Gemini and Cancer, the project’s name has a deeply personal and special meaning for her. Now, earlier this month, I wrote about Hirsh’s latest single, the sultry “Get You High,” a single that I think will further her growing reputation for crafting slick, Quiet Storm R&B-influenced synth pop centered around Hirsh’s sultry vocals, shimmering synths and a sinuous bass line.

Along with the release of her newest single Hirsh is in the middle of a short national tour, opening for the African alt pop ANIMA! and the tour included a May 18, 2018 stop at The Knitting Factory.  Unfortunately, I was only able to catch about half of her set, as I had to run to House of Vans to catch The Kills — but the set did feature some new, unreleased material that subtly refined the sound that first caught my attention and the attention of the blogosphere. Check out the tour dates and then some photos from the set below.
