Although Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs (vocals) and Max Foreman (vocals and keyboards) formed their latest project Bouquet within the last couple of years, both members have had extensive histories as musicians and artists – Pennypacker Riggs was a founding member and frontperson of the San Francisco, CA-based folk act The Finches while working as a visual artist. Foreman has a background in experimental composition and was a cofounder of the San Francisco-based instrumental trio, Tenebre.

When the duo formed Bouquet, they had a shared vision of combining pop songwriting, analog electronic instrumentation with a minimalist approach, and as you hear on “Stacks on Stacks,” the first single off the duo’s forthcoming debut EP, In A Dream, the track bears a resemblance to Kraftwerk‘s Trans Europe Express as it pairs dramatic yet ethereal synth chords, pittter patter-like drumming with Pennypacker Riggs equally ethereal vocals; however, unlike that great Kraftwerk album, “Stacks on Stacks” evokes the sensation of a fever dream – the sort in which it’s difficult to determine if that was a phantom in front of your face or not before it dissipates like smoke.
