As a co-founder of the legendary Rebirth Brass Band and as a renowned solo artist, much ink has been spilled on the work of the New Orleans-based trumpeter and vocalist Kermit Ruffins – and for good reason, as Ruffins has been extremely prolific throughout the years. His latest effort, #imsoneworleans,  which is slated for an April 21 release through Basin Street Records is reportedly deeply influenced by the music and culture of his beloved hometown – and has the carefree, let the good times roll attitude that has been the trumpeter and vocalist’s trademark for the past 30 years.  Featuring a collection of covers and original compositions, the album also marks the first time Ruffins is backed by The Barbecue Swingers for the first time in over a decade.

The album’s first single “Put Your Right Forward” is a breezily upbeat, energetically funky composition based around a loose, almost playful 12 bar blues arrangement, comprised of keyboards, bass, drums, trumpet (in particular, Ruffins silky trumpet playing) and vocals. The song makes me think of summer barbecues with the extended family – and picturing the old-timers doing an old school two step to the song.

Of course Ruffins will be on tour to support the album and the tour will include a May 29 stop at Brooklyn Bowl. Be on the lookout for a good time.
