Comprised of Daniel Paxton (vocals, guitars), Paxton’s brother, Conor (bass, pedal steel guitar), Patrick McHugh (backing vocals, guitar), Jimmy Cullen (backing vocals, keys) and Donagh O’Brien (drums), the Irish quintet of Buffalo Sunn can trace its origins to a previous band, Sweet Jane. Fueled by a change in musical direction, style and lineup, a name change was deemed necessary and Buffalo Sunn was formed in October 2013.
Since the Irish quintet’s formation a couple of years ago, they’ve quickly developed a reputation for their live shows and for a sound that channels the jangling and cinematic, shoegazer rock of the 120 Minutes days paired with ethereally gorgeous three part harmonies and equally gorgeous melodies, as you’ll hear on their latest single “By Your Side” off their latest album, By The Ocean By The Sea, which was recently released in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In other words think of The Verve, Oasis, Blind Mr. Jones, The Stone Roses and a long list of others, and you’ll hear an uncanny similarity.
Lyrically, the song is an earnest and heartfelt expression of devotion towards a friend, towards a lover, towards just about anyone you may love deeply; the sort of thing everyone would be desperate to hear – that you’d have someone right there by your side, always.
Based on “By Your Side,” it’s not surprising to hear that the band has made the festival rounds, playing at CMJ, Singapore’s Music Matters, Hard Working Class Heroes and Ireland’s two biggest festivals, Oxygen and Electric Picnic. But if you’re out on the West Coast, you can catch them as they’re making a number of West Coast stops including Musexpo in Los Angeles, and SXSW.
