If you’ve been following JOVM for quite some time now, you’ve probably come across countless mentions of the increasing numbers of emails I receive from labels, publicists, band managers, and artists from all over the world. Just a few days ago, I heard from Meeka Kates, a Lyon, France-based singer/songwriter and producer, who has also spent time in Los Angeles, and here in NYC.  Although Kates claims Frank Ocean, James Blake, The Weeknd, John Mayer, Washed Out, SBTRKT, The Beatles, Amy Winehouse, Ben Khan, Rhye, Sylvan Esso, tUnE-yArDs, Van Morrison, Flume and Norah Jones as artists he likes on his Facebook Fan Page, one of Kates’ biggest influences is Jose Gonzalez, best known for his work in the critically acclaimed Junip. 

As you’ll hear on Kates’ latest single “The Waves” the song is comprised of thoughtfully poetic lyrics with a subtle hint of remorse and ache paired with acoustic guitar, gently cascading synths and swirling electronics – and as a result it bears an uncanny resemblance to Junip’s quietly impressive work in the sense that it meshes disparate influences – jazz, folk, electronica and 70s singer/songwriter-based light rock – in a way that’s remarkably coherent.
