Live Concert Photography: Donuts Are Forever 10
Brooklyn Bowl
February 13 2016 – February 14, 2016
As you can imagine, life in the JOVM world has been especially hectic — and perhaps more so since I started working at a day job in SoHo earlier this month. Sometimes we have to do what we have to do to get by, you know? But even before that had happened, it’s admittedly rather easy to quickly fall behind on photo editing or other related and extremely tedious tasks. After all, who wants to spend hours editing and making minor adjustments to lighting and framing to several hundred pictures — even if you have to?
Starting under rather humble beginnings a decade ago, Rare Form’s Donuts Are Forever party is a an annual tribute to the life and music of beloved and legendary hip-hop producer and artist James “J. Dilla” Yancey, who tragically succumbed to complications from lupus in 2006 — and the party works as a fundraiser for the J. Dilla Foundation. The tenth annual Donuts Are Forever party was arguably the biggest in its history as organizers spread to celebration to several different locations, including Miami and Montreal with the main celebration at Brooklyn Bowl taking place over the course of Valentine’s Day and President’s Day weekend. The first night of Donuts Are Forever 10 was hosted by A Tribe Called Quest‘s Jairobi and featured DJs DJ Run P and DJ Spinna, along with performances by Daru Jones and the Ruff Pack and Illa J. And the second night, which was hosted by Skyzoo featured DJ Dstrukt, DJ Parler, Boogie Blind, the legendary DJ Evil Dee and DJ Eclipse. I was there along with Abdul, C and about 1,500 friends, associates, music industry professionals, music fans, J. Dilla fans and hip-hop heads. Check out some much overdue photos below.
