Live Concert Photography: Hennessey and Girl Skin at Berlin Under A 7/7/19

Despite her relative youth, Leah Hennessey is a grizzled New York music scene vet: she’s fronted a handful of bands including Pornography, an act that featured the Ryan Adams and Johnny T. Yerrington; Make Out, an act that featured Junior Senior‘s Jesper Mortensen (guitar) and Chase Stauffer (drums). Her latest project, the eponymous Hennessey is a mysterious, Yeah Yeah Yeahs–like art punk act. Along with Girl Skin, Leah Hennessey’s latest project opened for Princess Goes to the Butterfly Museum at Berlin Under A the other day. Sadly, I missed the headliner. I went solo, and once I went to the bar to get a beer and use the bathroom, I lost my spot. Such is life. But I did get photos of the openers. Check out photos below.

GIRL SKIN is an up-and-coming Brooklyn-based collective led by its founding member, singer/songwriter and guitarist, Sid Simons and features a rotating cast of contributors and collaborators including Ruby Wang (violin), Sophie Cozine (vocals), Stan Simons (bass, vocals), Noah Boling (drums) and Wyatt Mones (guitar). Over the past couple of years, through the release of a handful of singles,  the act has developed a reputation for crafting an ethereal chamber pop sound that draws from folk and art rock — although live their sound seems to be one part glam rock, one part AM rock, as it balances attention to craft with heartfelt earnestness.

Thematically and lyrically, the Brooklyn-based collective’s material is deeply influenced by its founding member and primary songwriter’s childhood. Simons was born in Portland, OR and spent his early childhood split between Australia and New York. As a teenager, he lived in Shanghai. And instead of finishing high school, Simons went on a rambling cross-country road trip.
