Brooklyn Bowl

February 14, 2015

If you’ve been following JOVM over the last couple of weeks, you’d probably have the sense that things have been incredibly busy around here – so busy that I haven’t had the proper opportunities to catch up on all the things I’d like to catch up on. But that’s the life of a blogger. In any case, last month I was at the unofficial home office at Brooklyn Bowl to catch the young up-and-coming band, Unlocking the Truth and Living Colour. (Sadly, because the Q59 bus can occasionally be dreadful, I wound up missing the opener. Worse is the fact that it’s not the first time that’s happened.)

I’ve seen Unlocking the Truth a couple of years ago at the Afropunk Festival and the last couple of years have shown some artistic growth for the young band, as an increasing amount of their songs have started to pair their instrumentals with original lyrics based around prototypical heavy metal themes. Then again, since they’re so young what could they possibly write about without sounding ridiculous – getting into detention? or maybe that homework and school can suck? having a crush on the girl that sits next to them in math? Still, I hope for continued success on their part. There’s something about those young brothers that makes many of us want to cheer them on.

Living Colour’s set was comprised of their standards “Cult of Personality,” “Type,” “Funny Vibe,” “Open Letter to a Landlord” and a few others but also of much deeper, cuts including one of my favorites “Solace of You.” But they didn’t stick to playing the material by the letter, “Funny Vibe” included a sequence with Corey Glover leading a timely chant of “Hands Up! Don’t Shoot!” which added a timely relevance to a song that deals with the repugnance of stereotypes. It somehow added even more power to an already powerful song. The version of “Solace of You” added a horn solo that gave the song a mournful tone. Their set also included a nubmer of special guests including the young guitar prodigy Brandon “Taz” Niederauer, among others.
