New Audio: Summer Heart’s 60s Psych Pop Inspired Sound

Summer Heart is the solo dream pop recording project of the Swedish singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist David Alexander. Summer Heart has received attention for a nostalgic, 60s psych pop-leaning, lo-fi sound that bears a subtle resemblance to to Caribou, Washed Out and others, and for being one of the pioneers of Sweden’s dream pop movement, a movement that includes Moonbabies, The Land Below, Hey Elbow, Blind Lake and Emerald Park. And with the 2011 release of his Please Stay EP, Alexander received international attention as it topped the charts at Hype Machine and received praise from the likes of The Guardian and The Star.

Alexander’s international profile has grown as several of his songs were picked up by TV and movie production companies, including the NBC series, Whitney, which brought him the attention of millions of American TV viewers.

And although Summer Heart is primarily a solo recording project, Alexander has toured with some of his dearest friends as his backing band; in fact, Natalie Hamingson and I caught Alexander at the New Music Seminar’s New Music Nights Festival, and we were both impressed by his sound. Interestingly, Alexander’s latest single “Nothing Can Stop Us Now” consists of jangling guitars, washboard-led percussion, layers of ethereal vocals and cascading synths to craft a sound that clearly owes a debt to 60s psych pop and to In Ghost Colours-era Cut Copy but with a buzzing, summer afternoon warmth at its core.

Alexander will be embarking on a North American tour this fall with a couple of European dates. Check out the tour dates below.
