Photography: Forest Park 12/16/20 and 12/17/20
We recently had one of the biggest snowstorms in the region in about five years or so, and of course, I was thrilled to be able to take my trusty Canon 77D and take some photos. When the snow has just fallen, New York can be be absolutely magical.
Because I wanted to maximize the amount of sunlight I could have to shoot, I decided to go to Forest Park — and the end result was something hauntingly beautiful. Check out some photos below.
Caption: Forest Park, Queens, NYC: There are sections of Forest Park that suddenly transport you to rural Upstate New York or rural Vermont — and yet you’re still be near Woodhaven Blvd. or Myrtle Avenue. But it’s peaceful and there are few places in the city, where light looks like it does during golden hour.
Caption: Forest Park, Queens, NYC: This particular snowman — the second of the day — had a slightly human-like visage. And the little hair plugs makes him look like someone I may have come across at some point in Queens!
Caption: Forest Park, Queens, NYC: I love the trees in Forest Park. Some of them twist and turn in unusual angles — and it creates this feeling of being in a haunted cartoon or a kid’s fairytale. Is there an evil witch somewhere, waiting to snatch you? You’ll have to find out for yourself.
Caption: Forest Park, Queens: I haven’t seen a snow angel in even longer. And seeing this one brought back found memories of playing and roughhousing in the snow as a child. God, that was so very long ago. It feels like a different world.
Caption: Metropolitan Avenue, Kew Gardens Hills/Richmond Hills, Queens NYC: This adorable snowman was the first of two or three snowmen I saw. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a decent snowman. Also to be fair, hearing kids laugh — despite how shitty everything is, is a delight.

Caption: Kew Gardens, Queens, NYC: I think Woodstock was here before me.
Caption: Richmond Hill, Queens, NYC: This is the wisest thing I’ve seen any child — or anyone really say: More Love, Less War. They’re absolutely right.
