Scavenger Hunt and Haerts at Brooklyn Bowl 5/11/14

Scavenger Hunt and Haerts

Brooklyn Bowl

May 11, 2014

I’m still catching up with a variety of posts, photos and more – and it seems to be a way of life for the harried blogger, who like Clark Kent quickly changes clothes and then rushes off to cover a show with camera in tow. And naturally, because I’m so exceptionally busy, it means that I desperately try to maximize as much time as I can. If i get a seat on my commutes back and forth to work, I’m editing photos. Or if I’m mostly caught up on posts during the day, I’ll edit photos during my lunch break; in fact, I’m working on this post while watching some of the Argentina vs. Switzerland World Cup match with a few colleagues …

But back in early May, I was at Brooklyn Bowl for a night of indie electro pop featuring blogosphere sensation Haerts and their opening act, the Los Angeles. CA-based Scavenger Hunt. Scavenger Hunt’s set was the most straightforward and danceable of the night, as it bore a resemblance to Yaz, New Order and others; in other words, we’re talking about densely layered synths and seductive vocals. It wasn’t the most original stuff I’ve ever heard but it was fun and it had the very young Brooklyn Bowl crowd dancing exuberantly.

On the other hand Haerts played a set based around their Hemiplegia EP, an EP which consist of slow-burning, plaintively cinematic ballads. Interestingly their live versions of “Wings,” and “All The Days” were fairly straightforward – but even the live versions reveal their material’s slick production style and uncanny directness. if there was one thing I wished for, I wished that their lead vocalist Nini Fabi did a bit more – for the most part, when she wasn’t at the keyboards, she kind of stood rooted in place instead of engaging the crowd more. However, they won the crowd over with the strength of their material more than the force of their personality.

Check out some photos below.
