Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner is the latest in a long run of funky bass playing virtuosos, and earlier this year, he released his latest effort, Apocalypse, which was produced by Flying Lotus to critical praise as it offers listeners a bit of spaced out funk with elements of soul, electronica, pop, prog rock, and of course, funk. Thundercat recently sat in with the Roots on a recent taping of Late Night with Jimmy Kimmel and he played “Heartbreaks and Setbacks,” a song that manages to feel sophisticated, shimmers with a cosmic glow and yet is incredibly sexy. Live, it manages to be perfectly suited for the Roots – as it bears a slight resemblance to their famous collaboration with Erykah Badu "You Got Me.“ But check out Thundercat’s dexterous bass playing – it will probably remind some of the great Bootsy Collins.
Look out for this dude, as he’ll be embarking on a North American tour starting November 13 in San Francisco, CA with stops in Portland, OR; Vancouver, BC; Denver, CO; Chicago, IL; Toronto, ON; Montreal, QC; the Music Hall of Williamsburg on November 25th; Boston, MA; Washington, DC; and Los Angeles, CA.
