More than enough ink has been spilled on Run DMC and their legendary and influential careers and time together, as well as what they meant to expanding hip-hop from a mostly local and regional thing to the lingua franca of just about anyone under 45. What I will say as a personal note is that as a child I loved Run DMC so much that I begged, pleaded and cajoled my parents into buying me a pair of Adidas like my heroes. If I remember it correctly, my parents took me to a local Modell’s to buy me a pair and within a few weeks the sneakers fell apart. Believe me, for a 5 year old, that was one of the most disappointing things to experience . . .Yet whenever I hear a Run DMC song, I’m immediately transported to 1983, 1984, 1985 and so on.
In any case, because of the holiday season check out the music video for Run DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis,” a song that has become a holiday staple since its release in 1987. Hopefully this will be an ongoing holiday tradition around here. So to those who celebrate, Merry Christmas!
