Last night, I was back at Rockwood Music Hall to catch the Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Ward White. White may be best known as one half of the chamber pop duo McGinty and White, which also features Joe McGinty, the former Psychedelic Furs keyboardist and founder of The Loser’s Lounge; and White has long been a featured vocalist and backing musician in The Loser’s Lounge series.
His debut effort with McGinty was released to praise from the likes of The New Yorker and The New York Press, a publication that I can proudly say I once wrote for several years ago. Interestingly, White has quietly developed a reputation as a solo artist of note, as his previously release effort Bob and his latest effort, Ward White Is The Matador have been praised by the likes of iTunes, New York Magazine, Magnet and CMJ for a sound that compares quite favorably to Scott Walker (one of the more sadly underrated and under-appreciated songwriters of the past 50 years), 70s David Bowie, T. Rex and others; in other words, his work to date borrows liberally from glam rock but possesses an art school sheen. And yet, if the listener dives beneath the surface, they’ll discover material that’s at times hauntingly beautiful and darkly witty – with some rather playful wordplay.
