Late last month, I was in Philadelphia for the first weekend session of Asian Art Initiative’s Sound Type Music Festival and Music Writers Workshop. Because of the nature of the trip down, it had felt as though it were somehow more of a whirlwind experience than before.

Khyber Pass Pub is one of my favorite Philadelphia area haunts. I’ve almost always manage to make a stop there whenever I’m in town: If you love beer, their craft beer list is super eclectic rotating list and features some really tasty beers. And it’s fairly affordable. Their kitchen specializes in Southern, cajun and creole and includes some vegan options. I’ve recently stopped for their brunch, and I’ve been super impressed.

The decor was crafted by German woodworkers and was used in the Centennial Celebration, prior to its use at the bar. Oh, and they host events upstairs.

So on a lovely but chilly morning, I stopped by Khyber Pass to have a brunch and kill some time before the initial Sound Type workshop. I ordered the No. 56 — two eggs any style, choice of protein, hash browns and toast with butter. And I ordered an Alesmith Nut Brown, followed by coffee. I probably would have had a few more beers but I realized that might have been a bad look. Plus, I hadn’t slept much the entire weekend. I desperately needed some coffee to keep going. (No, it wasn’t from being super wild. It was more from suffering through acid reflux. I’m getting old, y’all.)

As far as the food, the eggs were fluffy. Although I should have asked for a little bit of cheese in them. The hash browns had just the right amount of pepper to them. For some reason, I wasn’t super happy with any of the sausage I had while in town. But it seemed fairly fresh. A decent start to the day, that’s for sure.
