New Audio: Calyman and LutchamaK Team up on the Brooding “Just an Old Song”

Calyman is a French singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer, whose career started back in the 90s. And over the course of the past three decades, Calyman has written and recorded material that has touched upon rock, pop, trip hop, contemporary jazz and world music — but over the past decade or so, he has primarily worked in electronic music, with electronic duo 20 Mille.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve managed to spill quite a bit of virtual ink covering the ridiculously prolific French JOVM mainstay and electronic music producer LutchamaK.  LutchamaK has dabbled and experimented in an increasing variety of sub-genres and styles within electronic music with an effortless aplomb.

Calyman and LutchamaK have recently teamed up in a new recording project that the pair have dubbed CalymaK, which features Calyman on bass keys and vocals and LutchamaK contributing programming, percussion and production. The duo’s latest single “Just An Old Song” is a brooding bit of Peter Gabriel-like electro pop featuring a sinuous bass line, industrial clang and clatter, glistening synths and Calyman’s plaintive vocals. Interestingly, “Just An Old Song” may arguably be the most accessible yet forward-thinking bit of work the duo have worked on to date.
