Brother Ali and Immortal Technique and Special Guests at Brooklyn Bowl 4/11/14

Brother Ali and Immortal Technique and Special Guests

Brooklyn Bowl

April 11, 2014

Lately, i’ve been an exceedingly busy man, and have been trying my best to keep up to date on things – but at times things have been difficult to say the least. And then add various technical issues with uploading photos and it makes certain aspects of my life extremely interesting … But back in early April, I was at Brooklyn Bowl for a night of extremely conscious and politically inspired hip-hop with the highly charismatic Brother Ali and Immortal Technique. Both always have something to say and do it with equal parts charm, wit and forcefulness.

There was one thing that I hadn’t seen at any concert before – at one point during Brother Ali’s set, a woman jumped up on stage and interrupted his set. Apparently the woman’s husband was thrown out earlier, and she had been desperate to get him back. Not only did it not work, she wound up getting thrown out herself, and it marred a pretty amazing set in a way that was really bizarre.

However, if there was  difference it was this: whereas Brother Ali was charming and witty, even in the face of something that marred his set; Immortal Technique’s set added a bit of punk attitude to the night, as he told truth to power – both politically and throughout hip-hop in a way that reminded me quite a bit of Chuck D’s Afropunk set last year. In other words almost incendiary in its fury and righteousness.

Check out some photos from the show below.
