It’s been three years since the release of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings last album, I Learned the Hard Way, and in that time, the band had spent two years relentlessly touring – they’ve played at the Sydney Opera House, the Hollywood Bowl, and played several sold out dates at the world famous Apollo Theater. Over the last year, they’ve been in their Brooklyn studios working on the follow up to I Learned the Hard Way. 

So we have the first single from Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings’ forthcoming August 6th release, Give the People What They Want, a track by the name of “Retreat!” Much like Daptone Records’ other releases, the track has the warmth of analog sound – and it makes the horns really come out and sound the way they should. What I love about this track is that Jones is practically saying. “you better step back, fool.” But she has a great voice that brings back memories of listening to old Motown-era songs on AM radio in a beaten up 79 Dodge Aspen with my folks.
