Justin Vernon, the lead singer of Bon Iver, has been pretty busy with several projects including Gayngs, guest spots on several Polica tracks, a new(ish) project, the Shouting Matches with friends and fellow collaborators Brian Moen and Phil Cook. So why did I call it a new(ish) project? Moen, Cook and Vernon played one show together 7 years ago, and they got together in Eau Claire, Wisconsin about a year ago to record material together – and that material became the Shouting Matches’ debut effort, Grown Ass Man.
“Avery Hill” is the first single from the album, and it has a 70s rock sound – it has a loose, bluesy, almost Southern rock feel. Some critics have compared their sound to Uncle Tupelo and the Allman Brothers but I think they’re wrong, at least on this song, I’m reminded of Tom Petty.
