Comprised of Ian Graham (vocals and guitar), Lisa Alley (bass) and Jason Sullivan (drums), the Austin, TX-based hard rock/stoner rock/doom rock trio The Well can trace their origins to when Graham was fired from his previous band. Determined to redirect his musical focus, Graham wound up hooking up with Lisa Alley and the two began writing musical together in their east-side Austin garage. Eventually, Graham and Alley recruited Sullivan, who was in the band that Graham was fired from.
With the release of the “Seven” 7 inch and their First Trip EP the band has quickly developed a reputation for a sound that has been compared to Black Sabbath, Sleep, Electric Wizard and Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats and in some way that shouldn’t be terribly surprising as their material is heavily inspired by cult horror films, 70s metal, stoner rock and thematically their material focuses on dark themes — i.e., murder, mayhem, death, etc.
“Mortal Bones,” the latest single off the band’s recently released debut album, Samsara is comprised of sludgy and scuzzy, blues and power chords, throbbing bass, thundering drums and sneering vocals — all before a Black Sabbath-like guitar solo to craft song that’s perfect for playing as loudly as possible and headbanging as often as humanly possible.
