A recent string of incredibly nice weather paired with not having any place in particular to be or to go has inspired me to wander around a bit with my camera as much as possible. And in many ways, doing so forces me to see familiar surroundings in a new light.
The past couple of days I’ve been wandering around my home borough — particularly, my own neighborhood, Forest Hills, Forest Park and the Court Square Station. Check out some photos below.
One of Forest Hills, Queens’ finest exports has been the legendary Ramones. Interestingly, the founding members of the band spent their formative years living not too far from where this mural dedicated to them is. While the mural is a bit worn here and there, the artist has managed to capture the essence and spirt of the band — including Joey’s impossibly skinny legs. But more important: Long live the Ramones! With the weather finally being consistently nice and Spring-like, it means that there are flowers and plants exploding in vivid color. I’m drawn to vivid color and luminous light — and Spring here is perfect for that.Just walking a few blocks from the 71st Street/Continental Avenue E,F,M, and R station and past the Forest Hills LIRR Station is a bit like managing to walk into the English countryside — or somewhere in New England. It’s gorgeous and hard to believe.
The same artist, who did the Ramones mural across the street did this one, dedicated to the old US National Tennis Center, which is a few blocks away. Naturally, they decided to focus on three boundary breaking champions and legends — Althea Gibson, Arthur Ashe and Billie Jean King. The Court Square E, F, G, M and 7 train has some of the oddest yet most vivid art work of the entire subway system. Every time I pass by it, I think about how odd it is.Some gorgeous flowers in my neighborhood.A tree in Forest Park as the sun was setting.
