Photography: Winter in Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Broad Channel, Queens, NYC 2/16/26

The past couple of weeks had been bitterly cold. Out in Broad Channel, portions of Jamaica Bay frozen over. Although we’ve had warmer temperatures where some of the snow and ice have finally begun to melt, you can still see icebergs and floes. Close to sunset, the colors and scenery can look much like an impressionistic painting . . .

The geese, ducks and swans weren’t bothered by me,
any other person — or car. To them, this portion of a Broad Channel was theirs. Human presence was tolerated. I did see a man feeding a swan and several other birds bread from his car. What appeared to be 1,000 or more birds sat on power lines.

This particular winter in New York has been something else, y’all.
