If y’all have been following me here for some time, you know that I attend roughly 100 concerts a year as a photographer, journalist and as a fan. But there’s something I haven’t told y’all: Over a decade ago, I had a serious tinnitus scare. I had a persistent and maddening ringing in my ears for several days after attending a very loud show. Luckily, it turned out to be water in my ears that took a bit to clear out. But ever since then, I’ve done everything I could do to protect my ears and my hearing.
I’ve used several different brands and types of earplugs over the course of the past decade, including the ones made from foam, silicone and everything else. While foam earplugs can reduce decibels, they can sometimes sound as though your head is underwater — and you can’t hear yourself or anyone else talk. I’ve used other brands that have made my ear canal itch, were uncomfortable or just difficult to put in or take out.
