Alexz Johnson is a Canadian-born, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter and actress, who played roles in several TV shows and films including Instant Star, So Weird, and Final Destination 3, which naturally helped her build a strong enough following to raise key funds to make a 17 city tour across the US and Canada, as well as the funds to record and produce her soon-to-be full-length effort, Let ‘Em Eat Cake.
As the middle child of nine, Johnson began writing songs with her brother Brendan when she was 12, and after writing theme music for shows such as Pretty Little Liars, Degrassi and others, and portraying musicians in multiple Canadian films and TV shows, she began to experiment with her own music, further refining her sound to soulful pop sound. She had even attracted the attention of major labels – she first signed to Capitol Records in 2005 and Epic/Sony in 2008. And typical for the major label machine, she recorded a full-length album which was never released because of various internal changes.
“Let ‘Em Eat Cake,” the album’s title track and the album’s first single starts off with as a dirge with a bluesy guitar line, stomping percussion an Johnson’s vocals and it manages to bear a dim resemblance to Johnny Cash’s “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” but with a sleeker, soulful bent. Synths and other instrumentation helps the song build up at the hook to build up the song’s energy. And interestingly, the soaring hook manages to also reflect that song’s narrative arc, as Johnson’s vocals turn from wistful to calm defiance.
Johnson will be on an extensive tour with Jared and the Mill throughout October and November, and it’ll include the seemingly prerequisite stop in NYC for two CMJ Festival showcases – October 22 at The Living Room and October 23 at The Marlin Room at Webster Hall.
