Dave “Squids” Kerzner is a Miami, FL-based musician, songwriter and producer, who was once a member of Sound of Contact with Simon Collins, the son of 80s pop star and Genesis frontman, Phil Collins. After co-writing and co-produding Sound of Contact’s debut effort, Kerzner left the band due to creative and personal differences, among other things. And since his departure from SOC, Kerzner has been extremely busy with his company Sonic Reality, a sound and music software company whose motto is “Sample Everything”. Dave and his company have sampled instruments and programmed sounds for companies such as Yamaha, Roland, Alesis, Clavia, Propellerheads, Emagic, Steinberg, Digidesign, Cakewalk, Mackie, Native Instruments and many others.
As a musician, Kerzner has has played keyboards and done sound design with artists such as Kevin Gilbert, Phil Collins, Bono, Jon Anderson, Barbara Streisand and many others. He has programmed and/or sampled custom sounds for Crowded House, Genesis, Aimee Mann, Smashing Pumpkins, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Madonna, Beyonce and many others.
And over the past year or so, Kerzner has alspo been working on his forthcoming solo debut, New World, which is slated for a late October release. New World is reportedly a concept album – and the album’s first single, “Stranded” is a nearly 10 minute epic song, divided into 5 separate and densely orchestrated movements. Interestingly, the single has a sweeping, larger-than-life, cinematic feel, as though it should be part of the credits of a futuristic sci fi thriller while bearing an uncanny resemblance to Delicate Sound of Thunder-era Pink Floyd.
Although the song is technically quite complex and densely layered with levels of nuance that reveal themselves on repeated listens, the song manages to possess the accessibility of a hard rock song.
