Formed in Dallas, TX by Rhett Miller back in 1993 the Old 97s are considered by many journalists, critics and others as pioneers of the alt country scene of the mid to late 1990s, which also included bands like Uncle Tupelo, Drive-by-Truckers, Whiskeytown, The Jayhawks, The Bottle Rockets and a few others.

Initially, the Old 97s were a very popular, local bar band in their hometown when they quickly caught the attention of two different labels – Bloodshot Records who released their Wreck Your Life, an album that captured the attention of Elektra Records. Elektra had signed the quartet with the hopes that alt-country would be the post-grunge period thing; however, sadly, alt-country didn’t catch on in the way that the label expected. Although the the Dallas, TX-based quartet has long been critically acclaimed, their sales didn’t add up in a way that Elektra saw as feasible and the band was eventually dropped – although the band has long been critically applauded by countless journalists.

However, the Old 97s have long been a beloved cult-status band and in the iTunes era, building up a devoted fanbase will provide you with a level of sustainable success. In fact, a very dear friend of mine, who hails from Texas absolutely adores them. So in her honor and in honor of the Old 97s two Brooklyn Bowl shows – tonight and tomorrow night – check out “Let’s Get Drunk and Get It On.” The track is a sweet song about getting drunk with your lover and taking him/her home to you to do the deed all night. And that can be a lot of fun itself.
