Hailing from Tel Aviv, the duo of Hank and Cupcakes consist of powerhouse vocalist/drummer Cupcakes and bassist/pedal board magician Hank. Named in reference to Charles “Hank” Bukowski and one of his real-life lovers “Cupcakes,” the duo has been making a name for themselves for their performances here in the States since their arrival in 2008. I actually had the luck of catching one of their earliest Stateside performances, when the duo played at Astoria Music and Arts’ Astoria Music Now Festival in Astoria Park, and they had the makings of superstardom even then – Cupcakes in particular is a beguiling, seductive figure who commands a stage.
Last year, the duo released their Ain’t No Love EP, and the band will be on a lengthy tour during the winter and spring to support it. Hank and Cupcakes are worthy of catching and if you’re in the following cities, I strongly suggest that you spend a few bucks and catch them – Philadelphia, PA; Virginia Beach, VA; Chapel Hill, NC; Atlanta, GA; Athens, GA; Charleston, SC; Orlando, FL; Tampa, FL; Miami, FL; two dates in NYC – February 12th at Piano’s and April 3rd at Brooklyn Bowl.
In the meantime, check out RJD2’s remix of “Sweet Potion” – his remix adds some moodily swirling electronics with a big, hip hop beat.
