Live Concert Photography: Marc Rebillet at The Blue Note NYC 9/28/24
Dallas-born, New York-based electronic musician and YouTuber Marc Rebillet played four shows across both days of the weekend at The Blue Note downtown. For those, who aren’t “always online” and don’t know about Rebillet, some slight background: He’s known for improvised funk and hip-hop-tinged electronic music paired with free flowing, often extremely hilarious lyrics, created by a loop station, keyboard, vocals and percussion instruments, which he streams through YouTube and a Twitch live stream.
Because of his work’s emphasis on improvisation, it was oddly enough, a perfect fit for The Blue Note. The early Saturday night set featured an extended club friendly riff on espresso martinis, which a shout-a-along friendly hook “Hopped up on the beeeeeeaaaaaaaan!” Much of the songs of the set were based on cues from the audience — including a riff on birthdays that included a joke about someone’s grandma. He also played some crowd favorites “I’m late to work,” and others. Throughout the show, he had folks getting out of their set to dance — a first that I can remember at the venue.
