I caught the legendary jazz bassist Ron Carter during night three of his five night stay at The Blue Note. Starting his career in 1960, Carter over the course of 2,221 recordings has worked with a who’s who list of jazz musicians as both a leader and sideman including Cannonball Adderley, Thelonious Monk, Eric Dolphy, Roy Haynes, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, McCoy Tyner, and Horace Silver among a lengthy list of others. Oh, and he’s also collaborated with Roberta Flack and Billy Joel.
Carter played with Russell Malone (guitar) and Donald Vega (piano). Malone is pictured but sadly Vega isn’t; based on where I was sitting, I couldn’t see Vega. Regardless, photos from a gorgeous night of live jazz are below.
