Live Concert Photography: The Blue Stones at Piano’s 3/6/19

Over the past couple of years, I’ve written about the up-and-coming alt rock/blues rock duo The Blue Stones. Now as you may recall, the band which is comprised of longtime friends Tarek Jafer (vocals, guitar) and Justin Tessier (drums, percussion, backing vocals) can trace their origins to when the duo decided that they should start a musical project together, while attending college. The duo then spent the next seven years honing and perfecting their sound, songwriting and approach — with the end result being their self-released debut EP.

Last October saw the release of their full-length debut Black Holes, and the album features two previously released, attention-grabbing singles, “Rolling With The Punches,” a single that received placements on USA Network‘s Suits, Showtime‘s Shameless and ESPN‘s Monday Night Football and lead single and album title track “Black Holes (Solid Ground), which has amassed 8 million streams, furthered cement the duo’s growing profile for  playing blues rock that as the duo’s Justin Tessier says is “lean, raw, tight, without a wasted note.” “Be My Fire,” the album’s third single was centered around the sort of enormous power chords, thundering drumming and arena rock friendly hooks that bring The Black Keys, Jimi Hendrix, and North Mississippi All Stars to mind — although the song is actually an urgent and plaintive yearning for someone just out of reach.

The up-and-coming duo have been in the middle of a lengthy tour that included a New York area date at Piano’s last week. Sadly, the day they were in town was an exceedingly busy one for me — I stopped at a Vevo-hosted happy hour for some free booze, where I met up with Some Kind of Awesome‘s Kibbe and Karen Silva, who has written for Pancakes and Whiskey, Bearded Gentlemen and other sites in Chelsea. And because of traffic, we missed roughly half of their set — such is life, I guess. But we did catch them play “Black Holes (Solid Ground)” and several others to an enraptured Piano’s crowd. Check out the remaining tour dates below, followed by some photos from the set.
