Brooklyn Bowl

April 17, 2015

Last month, I was at Brooklyn Bowl to catch the impressive Chicago, IL-based funk outfit The Heard, whose somewhat retro sound that struck me as possessing elements of Maceo Parker and New Orleans-based funk and The Funky Meters, featuring funk legends Art Neville and George Porter, Jr. As for The Meters, the band which was originally comprised of Neville, Porter, Jr.  Leo Nocentelli and Zigaboo Modeliste, the band may arguably be one of the most influential and important acts that most people are generally (and sadly) only dimly aware of. Not only have they been the backing band for the likes of Dr. John, Lee Dorsey, Robert Palmer, Labelle and the legendary Allen Toussaint, their work has been sampled by countless hip-hop artists over the years, ensuring that their sound lives on forever.

Check out some photos from a night of deep and funky grooves below.
