Live Concert Photography: Vinegar Mother at Piano’s 1/20/18

If you’ve been frequenting this site over the past year, you’ve likely come across posts featuring the up-and-coming Brooklyn-based soul/progressive soul act Vinegar Mother Currently comprised of founding trio Julia Zivic (vocals), her brother Jason Zivic (drums) and Itamar Gov-Ari (keys, vocals), along with Mike Roninson (bass) and Chris Mazuera (guitar), the Brooklyn-based quartet can trace its origins to when it found trio began writing and performing together as Julia Zivic and The Brothers. And while in their native Connecticut, the founding trio received a bit of local and regional attention, thanks to a an appearance at 2014’s Greenwich Town Party, which also featured George Clinton, Santana, Buddy Guy and Dr. Dog.

Adding to a growing profile, the trio of Zivic, Zivic and Gov-Ari finished second in 2014’s International TalentHouse Jimi Hendrix Competition for their rendition of “Red House;” however, as they gradually expanded upon their sound, they decided that it was a perfect time to start anew — and they recruited Zack Slaughter and Chris Stelluti to flesh out their overall sound. And although Slaughter and Stelluti appear on the act’s self-titled Vinegar Mother EP, the band has gone through two lineup changes with Roninson replacing Slaughter, who joined the Marines, and Mazuera replacing Stelluti. Now, as you may recall, the quartet have played an increasing numbers of shows across town at venues like The Knitting Factory and The Studio at Webster Hall, Rockwood Music Hall, Piano’s and others, playing with the likes of The Lonely Biscuits, Kat Wright and The Indomitable Soul Band, Joanna Teters and Mad Satta. Along with that, they’ve made appearances at CMJ and Mondo.NYC.

Now, as you may recall, the Brooklyn-based soul act released The Sunny Seat EP, which featured the blogosphere attention-grabbing singles the soulful “Sunny Seat,” and the sultry “Slow;” but interestingly enough, the band has been gearing up for the release of their anticipated, full-length debut, slated for release in February — and naturally, that has included a number of shows across town, including a set last Saturday at Piano’s that featured the aforementioned singles, some material which appear on their debut album, as well as some unreleased material that may appear on a later effort.
