Sacramento, CA-based act !!! (pronounced chk! chk! chk!) have developed a reputation as being among a group of pioneers of NYC’s early 00s dance punk scene as their sound meshes punk rock energy with tight dance floor grooves. Interestingly, out of all of their counterparts !!! may have been one of the few bands who have stuck together and have managed to outlive the dance punk title by continuously releasing a number of albums that have shown thematic, lyrical and sonic growth.
The band’s latest effort, As If is slated for an October 16 release through Warp Records and the band has managed to promote some of the earliest releases from the album through a series of 7″ digital singles. Their latest 7 inch features the upbeat, house music-leaning single “Oooo” comprised of twinkling keyboards, wobbling bass, big beats and falsetto vocals paired with a song lyrically that’s describes an relationship in which its narrator is uncertain if he wants to continue. “Bam City” is a slow-burning yet upbeat tale about traveling the world and being cool, consisting of buzzing guitars and a hip-hop influenced hook. Both singles manage to be subtly genre mashing while possessing a mischievous energy just under the slick surface.
