Last Saturday, I made the trek down to Coney Island for the 40th Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade. It was the first parade in almost three years — and because it was a beautiful (but kind of chilly) day, there was a pretty big crowd for the parade.
In my opinion, the best part of the Mermaid Parade is the chaos of the parade’s immediate aftermath: People in all sort of costumes are around whether or not they actually marched in the parade — and they are everywhere, hanging out, bullshitting and partying. It’s a great opportunity to take quick and unguarded portraits of everyday New Yorkers. For photographers, it’s like the Super Bowl.
I had a fun afternoon of photos, followed by hot dogs, cheese fries and beer at Nathan’s. Photos below.
