Photography: 41st Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade 6/17/23
Earlier this month, I made the annual trek down to Coney Island for the 41st Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade. It was the second parade since the COVID-19 pandemic struck and put everything on pause, and because it’s the event to commemorate all things summer, the event brought out a big crowd.
As an adult, parades strike me as being kind of corny and exhausting. But in my opinion, the best part of the Mermaid Parade is the chaos of the parade’s immediate aftermath: People in varying degrees of costumes are walking around and hanging out whether or not they actually marched. And it’s a great opportunity to take quick and unguarded portraits of everyday New Yorkers.

Caption: Literally 40 seconds after this picture was taken, the skies opened up and a huge mass of people tried to get under the awning of the beach’s public bathrooms.
Caption: These two sisters were two of the most charming and funniest people I met at all day. And they came with their own couch! Pretty smart, if you ask me.
Caption: This merman seemed perfectly suited to survive a torrential rainstorm without problems.
Caption: This couple — Regina and Mike — did Latin ballroom dances up and down Surf Avenue most of the afternoon. It was a surreal dream to watch.
