Earlier this month, I made the annual trek down to Coney Island for the 41st Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade. It was the second parade since the COVID-19 pandemic struck and put everything on pause, and because it’s the event to commemorate all things summer, the event brought out a big crowd.
As an adult, parades strike me as being kind of corny and exhausting. But in my opinion, the best part of the Mermaid Parade is the chaos of the parade’s immediate aftermath: People in varying degrees of costumes are walking around and hanging out whether or not they actually marched. And it’s a great opportunity to take quick and unguarded portraits of everyday New Yorkers.
Oh and of course, there was a much-needed stop at Nathan’s for hot dogs, bacon cheese fries and a large Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner.
