FME 2026: Day 4: 9/6/26: On the fourth and final day of FME, many of the journalists were invited on a boat ride on a nearby lake, a couple of towns over.

When we go to the marina, my first thought was “what the fuck did I get myself into this time?” This was quickly followed by “I really should have asked more questions about this.”

I can’t swim so small boats are a disastrous idea for me. So here I am on a 24 foot boat on some random lake in Quebec with a small but friendly crew of Anglophone journalists— another American, me and five Brits. I’m old enough to be the father of two, maybe three of the Brits. That is the way of things at this point in my career and life. I’m not young. Nor am I old. But I like this 47 year old guy, who will turn 48 next March. . . .

I felt a bit of comfort when someone said “We won’t let you drown. You’re precious cargo.”

The boat ride was both terrifying and fun — sometimes in the same exact moment. The surroundings were gorgeous. We stopped at two different camp spots. One had an adorable dog and an unpictured newborn, both who had been there before us.

It was memorable — and for all the reasons.
