As part of the general strike, there was a march against ICE last Friday afternoon and evening. Reportedly 20,000 New Yorkers, including yours truly as a proud card carrying member of a free and independent press (while it still lasts), braved some incredibly frigid temperatures to show support for our friends in Minnesota and to show our love for our immigrant neighbors and friends.

It was one of the most difficult protests I’ve ever covered or taken part of. We marched up to Canal Street, where some drivers blew their horns in support and a handful of onlookers pulled out their phones to take photos or videos. Some nodded their heads in approval. A woman who was walking her dog chanted “Fuck ICE” with the marchers.

As we were moving up Sixth Avenue, I couldn’t feel my fingers or my toes, even with three pairs of socks on. I’ve been struggling with lower back and hip pain. My shoulders hurt. . . At some point keeping warm was the most important thing. 8 layers of clothes helped.

At Washington Square Park, there was a drum circle, impromptu chants and dancing by the arch for those hearty and insane souls who at this point had been out in the frigid cold for several hours.

Let’s be clear here: Fuck DHS. Fuck ICE. Fuck the Trump regime. Fuck the people who voted for this monstrous bullshit, too.
